Richmond, VA March 30, 2013 – Friends of McDonough Community Garden today announced the improvement of its community garden at the intersection of 33rd St and Forest Hill Ave. The garden is part of The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company’s GRO1000 initiative, designed to create 1,000 gardens and green spaces throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe by 2018, the Company’s 150th anniversary. Cheats Movement caught up with us over at the McDonough Garden this past summer and took a couple pics plus hit us with some video. The McDonough Community Garden is a community based garden located at 3300 McDonough Street on the Southside of RVA. The garden is being built in an area designated by the USDA as a food dessert — which means the area has limited access to fruits and vegetables. The project was the winner of the 3rd Feast RVA. A quick tutorial on how to use a barrel to grow loads of potatoes. i would do this but with tires so that you can just add more soil as the potatoes grow upward.

McDonough Community Garden
The McDonough Community Garden is a located in a USDA designated food desert. It is an 8500 square foot triangle in the middle of a semi residential neighborhood. The location is 3300 McDonough Street Richmond Virginia. The garden provides a beautiful edible landscape perfect for horticultural therapy, a community space for social gatherings and cultural activities and youth programs teaching children and teens in the community social entrepreneurship, biology, nutrition and ecology. In addition, the space is a bridge builder in the community allowing for inter-generational and cross cultural dialogues.
